Tragedy Strikes with the Loss of National Athlete and His Father in Fire, First Detention Made

A fire broke out at Kervansaray Hotel in Uludağ, Bursa. Turkey Ski and Snowboard Instructors Association President Yahya Usta and his son Berkin Usta, a national skier representing Turkey at the Beijing Winter Olympics, lost their lives in the midst of the flames.

Mother Fikriye Usta, on the other hand, was severely injured. It was revealed that champion skier Berkin shared a story from the fireplace in the hotel last night on his social media.

After the fire, the only video left is the one Berkin Usta recorded and shared on social media last night in Uludağ. First, Berkin recorded footage from the ski area in Uludağ, then shared footage from inside the hotel while the song “Semicenk’s geçiyor zaman” played in the background. However, these images turned out to be his last.

HOTEL MANAGER TAKEN INTO CUSTODY

Following the incident, Bursa Provincial Gendarmerie Command teams, coordinated by Bursa Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, detained the hotel manager Tekin Demir. Demir, who was taken to the Gendarmerie Command, is expected to be referred to the courthouse after giving his statement.

THEY PACKED UP LAST NIGHT

It was learned that after the end of the season, the family of ski instructor Yahya Usta, who lost his life in the fire, gathered with the ski teams last night as they were planning to go on a holiday. It was stated that the bodies of Berkin and Yahya Usta were taken to the forensic morgue as the investigation by the Public Prosecutor’s Office continues.

CLAIM OF “FIRE STARTED FROM THE BBQ”

It was alleged that Yahya Kemal Usta, who runs the ski room and cafeteria of the hotel, was present at the hotel with his son Berkin Usta and his wife Fikriye Usta during the fire, and the fire originated from a barbecue set on the veranda, which caused the plastic area above the veranda to catch fire.

Turkey Ski Federation Alpine Team athlete Berkin Usta represented Turkey in the Men’s Alpine Discipline Giant Slalom at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. Competing among 89 athletes, Berkin Usta ranked 45th with a time of 1:17.91 in his first run and achieved a time of 1:24.81 in his second run. Berkin Usta ranked 43rd in his first Olympic Games with a total time of 2:42.72.
